Tolland Republican Philosophy
The proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done, but cannot be done, or cannot be done well by individuals.
Good government is based upon the individual; equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity belong to all, regardless of race, creed, age, gender, disability, or national origin.
Government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money that they earn. Individual rights, liberties, property and well-being are continually eroded when citizens are denied personal freedom by excessive taxation, inflation, government waste and over regulation.
Free enterprise and the encouragement of individual initiative and incentive have given us an economic system second to none. The business and employment practices of government should incorporate the best practices established by the free enterprise system thereby assuring that taxpayers receive the greatest value for their tax dollars.
The most effective, responsive and responsible government is local, i.e. that government which is closest to the people.
The education of children has universal support and is essential to the continuation of our freedoms. Government's role in providing educational services should not erode parental rights and responsibilities, nor be used as a tool to solve social problems more appropriately handled elsewhere.
The natural environment shall be protected for future generations.
A watchful citizenry is necessary to keep government accountable. Citizens must assure that government does not become self-serving by following what is going on closely; asking difficult questions; demanding straight answers; voting regularly; and holding every elected official and public employee accountable.
The principles that have made us strong must be retained while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.
The Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
